I'm A People Person

by Maxie Wright :: Featured: June, 2003

Plain and simple, I like people. Always have, and always will. My wife of thirty wonderful years is an introvert and I’m an extrovert. So, opposites attract they say, but at my house I’m the people person.

Sometimes I get myself into a pickle from being so, because some folks misunderstand me since I will just talk to strangers at the drop of a hat.

It never presented a problem, evidently, during my childhood days. However, never quite knew if it was because of the good old days back then, when crime was not as prevalent or if it was due to my being a fat kid that would intimidated kidnappers since the high food cost probably wouldn’t justify the ransom, or if it was because I was so darn ugly that mama had to feed me with a slingshot and the criminal suspected with a face like mine who'd give a ransom to get me back.

But seriously, I never liked being away from people. I’m a socialite. Dad said I wouldn’t go to sleep as a child afraid I'd miss out on something. He was so right. I said all of that just to say this: Because I’m fond of folks, the golden rule and the almighty God makes me want to treat people like I want to be treated.

When i get a call on my Red tick puppies or my stud dogs I may miss a sale at times by being too honest. But, I’ve been down the road of life a few times and I know what it is like to be wronged.

Although my dad couldn’t read or write, he still raised us yunguns on the philosophy "you will never go wrong by doing right.” It has kept me from many mistakes in life, so I’m passing it on. When it comes to money or friends give me the friends every time. Like I said, when I’m talking dogs, I tell people things to help them from getting taken advantage of like I have in years gone by. It doesn’t cost one red cent to be a people person.

Now here is my advice from the purest of motives: Never buy a car on a rainy day. Never buy a beagle on good looks alone. You don’t buy a car because of the shiny paint if you do you may just be getting a shiny new paint job only from some shady character with a snow job.

Don’t be color blind and buy a dog just for color or good looks. Never buy from someone who will not take you hunting with them; therefore allowing you the ability to see if that Hussie will pack or if she's a lone ranger, or if she is man shy, or something worse.

Many pretty dogs have been sold on the strength of a pedigree or famous bloodlines. Usually these are some fairly good guidelines to make a safe decision. But occasionally for some strange reason there’s always the law of Murphy. ''Whatever can go wrong, usually does "

I, personally, am a pleasure hunter and do not find fault with competition hunters and field Trials. Now you'd think that veteran beaglers would be way beyond these tragedies but some time the human factor kicks in and we all could succumb to our fantasies.

You'd also be surprised what I’ve heard some old timers say on what basis they pick a puppy out. Sorry dummy, it ain’t always the runt that makes the best dog -- it’s a tradition but not a law. Traditional reasoning can be the downfall of the ones who choose to fall prey to it.

Someone said just because you're sincere doesn't mean you can't be sincerely wrong sometimes. We as individuals have to count on sound reasoning and sound judgment in all our decision making processes. Many friendships have been broken up through making judgment calls that turned out to be poor judgment calls. Whether we'll admit it or not, were only human and they're only dogs.

Nevertheless I still say its true, dogs are man's best friends. I don’t know it all, but I do know that I like people. But I just looooooooooove my dogs!.

Have a nice day,
Maxie
